close up shot of marry me orzo with ground turkey, bright red sun dried tomatoes, and vibrant green spinach

This One Pot Marry Me Ground Turkey Orzo is an easy weeknight version of the recipe everyone loves. It’s creamy, delicious and ready in 30 minutes. Ground turkey makes it faster than the classic chicken version, while sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, cream and Parmesan deliver that same rich, marry-me flavor.

Why You’ll Love This Marry Me Ground Turkey Orzo

Truly one pot. The turkey, orzo, and creamy sauce all cook in the same pan — no draining pasta, no separate skillet, no extra dishes. For another one pot meal, be sure to try my popular One Pot Taco Orzo Skillet next!

Ready in 30 minutes. Quicker than the classic chicken version since ground turkey takes no prep and cooks faster.

Family-friendly flavor. Creamy Parmesan and sun-dried tomatoes are rich and savory without being too “fancy” for picky eaters.

Built-in veggies. Fresh spinach wilts right into the sauce, so dinner and a green are handled in one pan. (Easily leave it out for any picky eaters.)

Key Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

  • Ground turkey. Use 93% or higher. Ground chicken or Italian sausage both work as swaps.
  • Onion & garlic. Dice the onion finely so it melts into the sauce. Fresh garlic is best, but jarred works.
  • Sun-dried tomatoes. Use oil-packed and don’t toss the oil — a splash in place of olive oil adds tons of flavor. No sun-dried tomatoes? Sub 2 tbsp tomato paste + 1 tsp balsamic.
  • Tomato paste. Adds richness and that signature color. Don’t skip it.
  • Orzo. Rice-shaped pasta found next to regular pasta. Gluten-free orzo (like Jovial) works — just watch the time, it cooks faster.
  • Chicken broth. Low-sodium so you can control the salt. Veggie broth works too.
  • Italian seasoning. Does the heavy lifting here — if yours has been in the cabinet for years, grab a fresh jar.
  • Heavy cream. Makes the sauce silky. Half-and-half works but will be thinner.
  • Parmesan. Freshly grated melts smoother than the shaker kind — similar flavor to the delicious sauce in my Creamy Garlic Parmesan Chicken.
  • Spinach. Fresh wilts right in. Baby kale, arugula, or thawed/squeezed frozen spinach all work.

Tips for the Best Marry Me Orzo

  • Don’t drain the turkey fat. Ground turkey is already lean — that small amount of rendered fat is doing real flavor work. Leave it in the pan.
  • Stir the orzo every few minutes. Orzo loves to stick to the bottom of the pan as it simmers. A quick stir every 2–3 minutes keeps it moving and prevents burning.
  • Let it rest for 2 minutes before serving. This is when the magic happens — the sauce thickens, the orzo turns silky, and everything comes together.
  • Use freshly grated Parmesan. Pre-shredded Parm has anti-caking agents that keep it from melting smoothly. Grate it from a block for the creamiest sauce.
  • Taste before serving. Parmesan and broth both bring salt, so wait until the end to adjust. A crack of black pepper and a pinch of red pepper flakes at the table goes a long way.

FAQ’s

Can I use ground chicken instead of ground turkey?

Yes! Ground chicken works as a 1:1 swap with the same cook time. The flavor is very similar, just slightly milder.

Can I make this with chicken breast instead?

You can, but it changes the cook time. Cut boneless, skinless chicken breast into bite-sized pieces, season and sear it first, then remove it from the pan and add it back in at the end with the cream and Parmesan. Total time will be closer to 30–35 minutes.

Why is my orzo mushy?

Orzo overcooks fast. Pull the pan off the heat when the orzo is just shy of al dente — it keeps cooking from the residual heat and absorbs more sauce as it rests. If you’re worried, start checking at the 10-minute mark.

Can I add more vegetables?

Definitely. Frozen peas, diced zucchini, or sautéed mushrooms all work well. Stir hearty veggies in with the onion, and quick-cooking ones like peas in at the end with the spinach.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (or oil from the sun-dried tomato jar)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ onion (finely diced)
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic (or 3-4 cloves, finely chopped)
  • ⅓ cup sun-dried tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1½ cups orzo
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan, plus more for serving
  • 2 cups fresh spinach (roughly chopped)

Seasonings:

  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Optional toppings:

  • fresh basil, torn
  • red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and break it into small crumbles as it cooks. Cook for 5-6 minutes or until it's no longer pink.
  • Add butter and diced onion to the pan. Cook 2 minutes until onion softens.
  • Add the garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, tomato paste and all the seasonings. (Italian seasoning, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper.) Mix the seasonings and tomato paste into the turkey and cook for 60–90 seconds, until tomato paste darkens slightly. Stir often.
  • Stir in the dry orzo, then pour in the chicken broth. Mix well and bring to a gentle boil.
  • Once boiling, turn heat down to medium-low, mix ingredients again and cover. Cook for approximately 12-15 minutes, stirring about 2-3 times throughout the process, so the orzo doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. The orzo should be just shy of al dente and most of the liquid absorbed.
  • Pour in the cream, then stir in the Parmesan and spinach. Simmer uncovered 2–3 minutes until the spinach wilts. Remove from heat and let sit for just a couple minutes to let sauce thicken slightly. Top with fresh basil, extra Parmesan and some red pepper flakes. Enjoy!
