The one drink I miss most since I stopped drinking alcohol almost nine years ago is the michelada. They used to be one of my favorite drinks.
When I was craving one recently, I tried to think of how I could make a non-alcoholic michelada and I thought, why not replace the beer with a lime sparkling water? It shouldn’t be too sweet and should have that same refreshing crispness of a beer.
I tried it and it came out great! I didn’t even miss the flavor of the beer. Let me show you how to make it so you can enjoy one yourself this summer. 🙂
WHAT’S A MICHELADA?
A michelada is a popular Mexican drink that combines beer with a variety of savory, spicy, and tangy ingredients. While a michelada is highly customizable, the typical ingredients are: beer, lime juice, salt and some form of spice, such as chili powder or hot sauce. Other popular additions are: soy sauce, chamoy and tomato juice.
Another variation of the michelada is a ‘chelada.’ This is a simpler version of the michelada that omits the tomato juice and other savory ingredients, consisting of just beer, lime juice, and salt.
My recipe is is a twist on the classic. It includes tomato juice, but we’re replacing the beer with lime sparkling water. I promise, you won’t even miss the taste of the beer because it still has all the classic flavors of a michelada.
INGREDIENTS
- Lime sparkling water – This is my replacement for the beer. Adds a refreshing, fizzy citrus flavor that’s not too sweet. I actually tried making this same non-alcoholic michelada using Sprite and I found the sweetness in the soda a little too heavy. A lime sparkling water works much better.
- Clamato tomato juice – I love Clamato because it provides a savory blend of tomato and clam broth. If Clamato isn’t your thing, you can go with your favorite tomato juice.
- Hot sauce – I especially like the Tapatío hot sauce in this recipe. It adds a spicy kick. If you’re sensitive to spice, start with a small amount and taste after each shake.
- Worcestershire sauce – Adds a deep, umami-rich flavor.
- Lime – Freshly squeezed for a tangy, zesty taste.
- Tajín seasoning (optional) – A mix of chili powder, lime, and salt for a spicy-sour rim.
- Ice cubes – This drink is best served ice cold. Chill all ingredients ahead of time or serve over ice.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
Grab a large glass and use a slice of lime to wet the rim of the glass. Sprinkle generously with Tajin.
Add the lime sparkling water, tomato juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and lime juice to the glass and stir well.
Carefully add a handful of ice cubes to the glass if the ingredients aren’t already cold.
Garnish with a lime wedge or cucumber slice and enjoy!
TIPS & NOTES
Adjust Spiciness: Add more or less hot sauce to suit your heat preference.
Chill: For the best flavor, make sure this is well-chilled before serving. Either serve over a glass of ice or make sure all ingredients are well-chilled, if you prefer not to use ice.
Customize the Rim: Experiment with different rim spices like Tajín, salt or even chamoy.
Use Fresh Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice gives a brighter, more authentic flavor compared to bottled juice.
Garnish Creatively: Garnish with cucumber slices, celery sticks, lime wedges or pickled jalapeños for an extra touch.
Make it a Meal: Pair with snacks like tortilla chips and guacamole, or a shrimp cocktail for a complete experience.
Healthier Alternative: This non-alcoholic michelada is a great choice for those avoiding alcohol while still enjoying a refreshing and flavorful drink.
Clamato Variations: If Clamato is unavailable, you can use regular tomato juice with a splash of clam juice or omit the clam juice for a vegetarian version.
Storage: Prepare the drink just before serving for the best taste and fizz. If necessary, mix the Clamato and other non-fizzy ingredients ahead of time and add the lime sparkling water right before serving.
Flavor Balance: Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. You might need more lime juice or Worcestershire sauce based on your preference.
Serving Size: This recipe can easily be scaled up for a larger batch. Mix in a pitcher and serve over ice for parties or gatherings.
