These Greek Yogurt Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins are soft, perfectly sweet, and packed with melty chocolate chips and sweet banana flavor. They’re a quick, family-friendly breakfast, snack or lunchbox treat made with simple pantry staples — and a great way to use up brown bananas. These banana muffins are made with the same Greek yogurt base as my Easy Greek Yogurt Chocolate Chip Muffin — a reader favorite.
Why You’ll Love These Greek Yogurt Banana Muffins
Moist and Fluffy: The Greek yogurt and banana keep them soft for days — never dry or crumbly.
Quick and Easy: Two bowls, no mixer needed, and they come together in about 30 minutes start to finish.
Customizable: Leave out the chocolate chips if you want regular banana muffins, or add something else like chopped walnuts, pecans, or a swirl of peanut butter or Nutella.
Family-Friendly: Kids love them in lunch boxes, and they’re a great after-school snack that actually fills them up.
Simple Ingredients: You know exactly what’s going into these muffins, which beats store-bought versions packed with preservatives and weird ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
Dry Ingredients
- All-purpose flour — The base of the muffin. Spoon and level it (don’t scoop) so you don’t end up with dense muffins.
- Baking soda — Reacts with the Greek yogurt and banana to give you that nice rise and fluffy crumb.
- Salt — Balances the sweetness and brings out the banana flavor.
- Cinnamon — Just a hint to complement the banana. Don’t skip it — it makes a noticeable difference.
Wet Ingredients
- Butter — Gives the muffins a rich, bakery-style flavor. If you prefer to use less butter, substitute half (or all) with avocado or olive oil. Both work great.
- Sugar — Just ¾ cup since the bananas add natural sweetness.
- Plain Greek yogurt — The star ingredient. Adds moisture, a protein boost, and that soft texture. Use plain (not vanilla) so it doesn’t compete with the banana flavor.
- Milk — 2% or whole works best. Plant-based milks like almond or oat will also work in a pinch.
- Egg — Helps bind everything and adds structure.
- Vanilla extract — Rounds out the flavor.
- Mashed banana — Use very ripe bananas with lots of brown spots. The riper, the sweeter and more flavorful. You’ll need 2–3 medium bananas to get 1–1¼ cups mashed.
- Chocolate chips — Milk chocolate is my go-to, but semi-sweet, dark or mini chips all work too.

Tips for the Best Banana Greek Yogurt Muffins
Use Very Ripe Bananas: The browner and spottier, the better. Yellow bananas won’t give you enough flavor or natural sweetness.
Don’t Overmix the Batter: Stir just until the flour disappears. Overmixing develops gluten and makes muffins dense and gummy.
Fill the Cups Almost Full: This gives you those tall, bakery-style muffin tops.
Start Checking at 18 Minutes: Every oven runs slightly differently. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
Let Them Cool Before Removing Liners: Muffin liners peel off the cleanest when the muffins have fully cooled. Warm muffins will stick.
FAQ’s
Yes! Fill mini muffin cups almost full and bake at 375°F for 10–12 minutes. This recipe will yield about 36 mini muffins.
Yes! These muffins actually taste even better the next day as the banana flavor deepens. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature or freeze a batch for grab-and-go breakfasts.
Absolutely. Thaw them completely, drain off any excess liquid, then mash and use as the recipe calls for. Frozen bananas are often extra sweet, which is great for these muffins.
Plain regular yogurt or sour cream both work as substitutes. The muffins may be slightly less protein-rich, but the texture will still be soft and moist. Avoid flavored yogurts as they’ll throw off the sweetness.
The most common culprits are: overmixed batter, too much flour (always spoon and level), or underripe bananas. Try again with these fixes and they should come out light and fluffy.
How to Store Greek Yogurt Banana Muffins
Room temperature: Store in an airtight container for 3–4 days. Add a paper towel to absorb extra moisture and keep them from getting soggy.
Refrigerator: They’ll last 5–6 days in the fridge. Warm them up for 10–15 seconds in the microwave before eating to bring back that soft texture.
Freezer: Wrap individually in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or microwave in 15-second increments.
Greek Yogurt Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp cinnamon
Wet Ingredients:
- ½ cup butter (or ¼ cup butter and ¼ olive or avocado oil – see recipe notes)**
- ¾ cup white sugar
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1-1¼ cup mashed banana (about 2-3 ripe bananas)
- ¾ cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375℉ and prepare your muffin tins by adding muffin liners or spraying with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, add the flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Whisk until mixed well. Set bowl aside.
- In a medium sized bowl, add the butter. Microwave for 20 seconds. Stir and microwave another 15-20 seconds. You want the butter soft and mostly melted.
- Add the sugar and stir until combined. Add Greek yogurt, milk, egg, vanilla extract, and mashed banana. Mix until smooth.
- Pour the bowl of wet ingredients into the large bowl of dry ingredients. Using a spatula or large spoon, stir until just combined. (Don't overmix.) Add the chocolate chips and gently fold into the batter.
- Fill each muffin cup almost full. Top with a few additional chocolate chips, if desired.
- Bake at 375℉ for 18-22 minutes. Muffins are done when edges are slightly brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. (Mine are done right at 19 minutes but each oven can be slightly different.)
- Let them cool for 5-10 minutes in the tray before removing. Enjoy or let them fully cool before storing. (Pro tip: muffin liners become the easiest to remove when fully cooled.) Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
